Identification of Carpet Mites
Carpet mites are a species of house dust mites are generally too small to be seen. These super tiny invaders are almost naked to the human eye and invade our bedding, carpets, clothing or any place suitable for them to find refuge. These pests feed on dead skin flakes from humans and animals. Some feed on mold as well. When left to multiply, house dust mites can cause allergic reactions in people and pets. Their guts have potent digestive enzymes that come out in their feces. When we come in contact with their exoskeletons or feces we are at risk of not only allergic reactions, but atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, aggravated asthma and allergic conjunctivitis too! It is recommended that you vacuum frequently, change your bed linens weekly, have your floors and upholstery steam cleaned at least once a year, and keep the humidity in your home below 45% to avoid an infestation. The mayo clinic also suggests using a dust proof/allergen-blocking mattress cover that is made of tightly woven fabric such as vinyl or plastic covers to eliminate the possibility of them getting onto your mattress.
Are Carpet Beetles Harmful?
Carpet beetles pose little threat to our health. The carpet beetle larvae have thousands of tiny spiny hairs on their bodies that can cause irritation or an allergic reaction to our skin if touched. The real threat they cause is to your carpet and belongings. They can literally destroy your carpets and upholstery from the inside out. They get into closets and storage boxes and chew holes in your clothing. Anything item that contains animal fibers are not safe from carpet beetle larvae, silks, furs, leather, wool, feathers or felt are especially at risk. Carpet beetles prefer dark, low-traffic areas such as closets, attics, storage spaces air ducts and under your carpet! You may be asking yourself where they come from to begin with! Carpet beetles can fly, they are attracted to flowers and foliage outside your home and begin their feeding there. They then enter through open doors, windows or unsealed cracks and crevices. Before storing any clothing, you should wash everything first. Then place it into a zip lock or other air tight bag, then store it in an airtight container. Frequently vacuum and rotate stored items to clean under and around them. Keep your air filters changed in your HVAC system as often as they get dirtied and occasionally inspect your attic and crawl spaces for signs of an infestation. Steam cleaning will effectively kill off any living carpet beetles and their larvae immediately.
