No matter how careful you try to be, the furniture in your home is going to get spots and stains on it at some point. This is especially true with your sofa. This is probably one of the most used pieces of furniture in your entire home. You aren’t going to have a professional clean your sofa every time you get a little spot on it. Eco Clean Carpet Cleaning is here to share some tips to help you spot clean your sofa when needed.
What Material is My Couch Made of?
The first step in spot cleaning your sofa safely without damaging it, is to find out what type of fabric you are dealing with. There should be a tag visible somewhere on the underside of your sofa that will let you know what type of solutions you can use to safely clean your sofa. If the tag has a “W” it means it is safe to use water to clean the sofa. For tags that have an “S,” you will want to only use solvent-based cleaners. Some sofas have a “WS” which means you can use water or a solvent-based cleaner on that piece. If the tag has an “X” the only safe thing to use to clean the sofa is a vacuum.
Prepare Your Sofa for Cleaning
To prepare your sofa for cleaning, you need to remove any dried and crusted debris from the surface. This can be done with a handheld vacuum or with the use of some of your vacuum attachments. Using a stiff bristled brush on the surface of your couch can also help loosen up any crusted spills so you can easily vacuum them up.
Baking Soda Helps Get Rid of Smells
At this point, if your sofa has any suspicious odors that have been bothering you, you can get rid of them with the use of baking soda. Generously sprinkle baking soda all over the surface of your couch and allow it to sit for several hours. The baking soda will absorb any unwanted odors lurking on the surface of your sofa.
Fabric Furniture Cleaning to Remove Spots & Stains
Now it is time to finally remove those spots and stains from your sofa. Depending on your sofa, mix the appropriate cleaner for the job. Warm water and a small amount of dish detergent often work well if you can use water to clean your sofa. Use only a clean, white cloth and gently blot the stain after you allow the cleaner to saturate the area for several minutes after applying. At this point, allow the sofa to dry and use a stiff bristled brush to fluff up the fibers if the fabric has a high pile.
